Occupy Protesters Take Over Charlotte Streets

By: Malachi Segers

It’s Day 1 reporting from the DNC and my first assignment: covering Occupy Charlotte.

The crowd consisted of hundreds of supporters, with signs saying things like ‘March on Wall Street South. Time to build the people’s power.’ Protesters began at Frazier Park, and marched all the way to the headquarters of Bank of America.

A large variety of issues were represented at the protest, including the high unemployment rate, drones in the Middle East, war, abortion rights, racism, gay rights, and more.

There were huge numbers of police alongside protesters, but from what I saw, it was a peaceful crowd and no tear gas was involved.

It wouldn’t be a protest without catchy sayings, and this one had plenty. Samples: “The people united will never be defeated.” “They say cut back we say fight back.” And “Ain’t no power like the power of people cause the power of people don’t stop.”
